POSITION:

Research Hydrologist/Research Agricultural Engineer

LOCATION:

Beltsville, MD

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: The position is located in the Hydrology and Remote Sensing Laboratory, Animal and Natural Resources Institute, Beltsville, Maryland.  The incumbent will develop and apply remote sensing techniques to improve the spatial and temporal responses of the SWAT water quality model to predict current and future changes in water quality, soil erosion and runoff across landscapes in the agricultural watersheds.   They will also evaluate the utility of biophysical parameters derived from satellite imagery to improve model performance at agricultural watershed scales.  The aim is to develop a decision support system to allow optimization and better planning and management of land use, soil and crop production practices for improving water quality, minimizing runoff and soil erosion and preserving the quality of soils within the agricultural landscape.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Recent Ph.D. in a field closely related to the study of water quality and land surface water interactions.  Specialized knowledge and experience in working with watershed soil and water quality models and the analyses and interpretations of model simulations results.  Familiarity with C- or Fortran programming for Unix/Linux workstations or PC environments.  Knowledge of ARCGIS, remote sensing applications for spatial analyses, and landscape processes that influence changes in soil water quality.
