DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: This position is located in the Quality and Safety Assessment Research Unit at the Russell Research Center, Athens, Georgia.  The incumbent will conduct research to develop sensing technologies for food pathogen and toxin detection using nanotechnology.  Single molecular study of biomolecules and biosystems, applies tools and measurement techniques to nanoscale physics and chemistry to generate remarkable new insights into how physical, chemical, and biological systems function.  Responsibilities include the development of highly integrated technologies to study the scientific and engineering basis necessary to realize robust, repeatable, and highly reliable characterization and detection of single molecule electronic and mechanical properties and single molecular interactions in biosystems.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Recent Ph.D. in Physics, Applied Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering or a closely related field is required.  Knowledge of surface modification, organic/inorganic interfaces, electrochemistry, machining and mechanical design, atomic force microscopy and related techniques is desirable.
