THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF
AGRICULTURE IS AN EQUAL
OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER.

ANNOUNCEMENT NO: RA-07-074L

POSITION:

Research Geneticist/Computational Biologist

LOCATION: Ames, IA

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: The position is in the Corn Insect and Crop Genetics Research Unit, Midwest Area, Ames, Iowa. The Unit conducts research on the genetics and biology of grain and forage crops. The incumbent will provide bioinformatics support to the research group and develops and applies software and databases to aid in the assembly and analysis of the full genome sequence of soybean, and comparison to the genomes of related genomes. The incumbent is a member of a team investigating the genetics and molecular biology of soybean genome structure and organization through large-scale analysis of whole-genome sequence. The project will involve comparison of genomic sequence from soybean cultivars, design of markers for high-throughput genetic mapping, integration of genetic and large-scale sequence information, evaluation and improvement of genomic sequence assemblies, characterization of genomic sequence for features of interest (such as genes, repetitive elements, regulatory regions, and centromeres), and comparisons with other plant genomes. The project also integrates diverse genetic, physical map, sequence, and phenotype data, making it available via public databases, web interfaces, and computational tools. The incumbent will be responsible for the conduct of experiments, data collection and analysis, and preparing the results for publication.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Ph.D. in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics/Computational Biology or closely related fields is required. Knowledge of Genetics/Genomics/Cell Biology and skill in computer programming is desirable.
